Cooking jobs are also quite plentiful and may be found in a variety of different types of dining establishments. Cook jobs are often filled by younger employees. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 35 percent of cooks are 24 years of age or younger. Cooking and other types of restaurant jobs also offer a certain degree of schedule flexibility with as much as 33 percent of cook jobs being part time positions. Because prep work begins before a kitchen opens, and clean up continues after it is shut down for the night, employees are needed to work early mornings, daytime hours, evening hours and late nights. As a result, professionals can often find shifts that fit well with the rest of their lives ?whether they're in school, raising children or using restaurant work to supplement their existing income.

Little formal education is required for most cook jobs. In general, a high school diploma or GED is preferred. Most prep cooks and line cooks learn food preparation through on the job training. Those who want to take on advanced cooking duties may attend cooking school through a vocational program, community college or culinary school. Cooks who put in the time to gain experience and show enthusiasm for their profession may advance to positions of more responsibility or to cooking jobs in higher paying establishments.

As of February 2012, the leisure and hospitality industry employed more than 13.5 million professionals, many of them in cooking roles. More than 41,000 positions were added to the food services and drinking places category in February 2012 alone. According to the BLS, 66 percent of all cooks are employed in restaurants and other establishments that serve food and drink. Around 16 percent of cooks work in schools, universities, hospitals and elderly care facilities such as nursing homes. The remaining 18 percent work in hotels, grocery stores and as private cooks.

Employment opportunities for cooks are expected to continue their upward trend. The National Restaurant Association expects restaurant employment alone to increase to 14.3 million by 2022. In addition, cook jobs in many establishments have a high turnover rate. Part time workers may leave to pursue full time employment elsewhere, and lower paid cooks may seek employment at higher paying establishments. High turnover means a constant demand to fill cook job openings.
