No matter which hospitality career option you choose (restaurant, hotel, resort, cruise ship, etc.), there are certain qualities employers look for and customers expect. Some people mistakenly think that the stress and responsibility level is low and the tasks are simple. However, those working in the business know that not everyone is cut out for this industry and those that are often share characteristics that make them successful.

Even though there is not just one “perfect” type for this position, certain traits that are well-suited for customer service positions can be coached and cultivated. Dedication: In the hospitality industry, it’s all about customer service. That means you’re willing to do what it takes to ensure your guests’ needs are being met and they’re having a positive experience. Guests remember when and where they’ve received stellar service and will return to your property the next time they’re in town. Can you go the extra mile?
Caring: Are you empathetic? When guests arrive tired and hungry or stressed, can you relate to them and understand what they need at that moment and make them feel welcome?
Engaging: Guests want to be engaged and appreciate a little conversation about their interests or reason for visiting your location. Asking a few questions can assist in anticipating how you can provide more personalized service.
Resourceful: You have to be able to think on your feet and handle the unexpected. The need to quickly solve problems is something that happens every day.
Calm: Part of successfully dealing with the challenges of guest requests, people who may be hungry or tired and complaining, is to remain calm and professional. If you tend to get flustered or easily stressed, this may not be the career path for you.
Team Player: You’ll be successful if you appreciate input from others and work well as a productive member of your team. You have to be willing to pick up the slack during peak times and high seasons by filling in and supporting others in whatever way is needed.
Like People: The nature of hospitality is making guests feel welcome and providing good customer service. Are you comfortable talking to a variety of people and assisting them? You must be able to convey interest and communicate effectively to all types of people.
Organized: In most hospitailty positions, there’s a lot going on a once. You have to be able to multi-task without losing track of things or getting frustrated.
Warm: A warm smile goes a long way. Can you convey genuine warmth and caring while interacting with your guest? According to Patel, although the room is clean, the bathroom sparkling and the amenities satisfactory, a warm greeting and a smile can differentiate your hotel from all the others out there.
Desire to Please: Do you enjoy making people happy? Then, you’re on the right track. Ultimately, you need to feel motivated to please your guests to establish a great career in hospitality and to feel fulfilled.
